1. Identify the main idea of a text.
2. Identify the supporting details to the main idea of a text.

Rationale Statement
The primary goals for this lesson include: (1) identifying what the main idea and supporting details are in a text (2) learn how to correctly develop a main idea with supporting details in their own writings (3) be able to write their own paragraph with a strong main idea and supporting details. Multiple examples of texts will be shown to the students until they have a clear understanding on what the main idea is of each text. A main idea worksheet will also be used to help students develop a main idea and supporting details for their own writing. Once, students have a clear understanding on how to identify, create, and write using ideas they will be able to write their own paragraph using the main idea concept.
Introduction
The teacher will introduce what a main idea is; along with supporting details by using the power point. Then have the students read examples on power point and identify as a class what the main idea is. Then will go over supporting details and examples with students. After students have a clear understanding, the teacher will instruct the next part of the lesson by introducing a writing part. The teacher will tell the students a topic, “Your favorite summer activity”, and the students will think of a main idea, which would be their favorite activity. To help the students with supporting details to their main ideas, the teacher will hand out worksheets. Once students have completed their worksheets, they can continue to writing the paragraph by using the supporting details as a guide.
